Recurrent Nova IM Normae

چکیده
We detected the second historical outburst of the 1920 nova IM Nor. Accurate astrometry of the outbursting object revealed the true quiescent counterpart having a magnitude of R=17.0 mag and B=18.0 mag. We show that the quiescent counterpart shows a noticeable variation. From the comparison of light curves and spectroscopic signatures, we propose that IM Nor and CI Aql comprise a new class of recurrent novae bearing some characteristics similar to those of classical novae. We interpret that the noticeable quiescent variation can be a result of either high orbital inclination, which may be also responsible for the low quiescent brightness, or the presence of high/low states. If the second possibility is confirmed by future observations, IM Nor becomes the first recurrent nova showing state changes in quiescence. Such state changes may provide a missing link between recurrent novae and supersoft X-ray sources.

High-speed photometry of the Recurrent Nova IM Normae
The recurrent nova IM Nor is found to have an orbital period of 2.462 h, shown by periodic dips in brightness. This is only the second recurrent nova known to have such a short period. We interpret the light curve as largely produced by a reflection effect from the heated face of the secondary star, probably with addition of a partial eclipse of the accretion disc.

متن کاملOPTICAL AND X-RAY OBSERVATIONS OF M31N 2007-12b: AN EXTRAGALACTIC RECURRENT NOVA WITH A DETECTED PROGENITOR?
We report combined optical and X-ray observations of nova M31N 2007-12b. Optical spectroscopy obtained 5 days after the 2007 December outburst shows evidence of very high ejection velocities (FWHM Hα ≃ 4500 km s). In addition, Swift X-ray data show that M31N 2007-12b is associated with a Super-Soft Source (SSS) which appeared between 21 and 35 days post-outburst and turned off between then and ...
متن کاملRecurrent Novae: What Do We Know about Them?
Recurrent novae (RNe) belong to the group of cataclysmic variables that exhibit nova outbursts at intervals on the order of decades. They are rare, with 10 Galactic RNe known to date. Two are known in the LMC, while there are a few suspected RNe in M31. Nova outburst models require a high accretion rate on a massive white dwarf to explain the recurring nova outbursts, making this class of objec...
متن کاملOn the Possibility of V4444 Sgr as a Recurrent Nova
V4444 Sgr (Nova Sgr 1999) has been recently suggested to be a possible recurrent nova based on the detection of the preexisting dust, which may have been formed in a previous outburst. We examined this possibility using the available outburst observations, including the VSNET observations. We also noticed that this nova was recorded in the OGLE II public photometric database, which covered both...
